PROPERTY OWNERSHIP & TRANSFER

For tax purposes, ownership is established as of January 1 of each year. If a property is sold or transferred during the year, the owner of record as of January 1 will assume tax liability. Any prorations or agreements between parties are private contracts and any questions regarding such should be directed to the closing attorney or realtor. If taxes become delinquent, enforced collection procedures may begin.

Once a deed has been recorded at the Register of Deeds office, tax records will be updated. Please make sure all mailing addresses are correct in order to receive any correspondence regarding property taxes and assessments. 

Once a plat has been recorded at the Register of Deeds office, tax records will be updated and our office will partner with the GIS department to update mapping records.

Property records can be accessed by using the Polk County GIS.
